Funeral Services: Licensing, Registration, and Renewal
The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department has implemented an online licensing system for Funeral Services occupations. This investment will simplify the licensing process, making it easier for applicants and licensees to apply for and renew licenses in New Mexico.
Applications for initial licensure must be submitted through an online portal.

Renewal Requirements
Practitioner Renewal
All licensees shall renew their license on or before June 30 of each year.
Practitioner Renewal Fee – $150
CEU Requirements:
- 10 hours of continuing education, including 2 hours of ethics, shall equal one continuing education unit (CEU).
- Regardless of what part of the year a person becomes licensed, there shall be no reduction or prorating of continuing education hours required for the next renewal period; however, any person who was first licensed during the same renewal period as they graduated from an accredited school of funeral service education shall not be required to earn continuing education for the next renewal.
- Any person who holds more than one license issued by the board may use the same continuing education hours for renewal of both licenses without having to earn separate continuing education hours for each license renewal.
- A licensee who is age 65 or above and who has been licensed by the board for at least 20 consecutive years shall not be required to meet continuing education requirements.
- A funeral service intern who is practicing funeral service under general supervision in any category shall be subject to the continuing education requirements of 16.64.6 NMAC
Practitioner Late Renewal
Late Fee $75
Failure to submit the required documents and fees by June 30 shall cause the license to expire and the license holder must refrain from practicing. The licensee may renew within a 60-day grace period by submitting payment of the renewal fee and late fee outlined in 16.64.2 NMAC and compliance with all renewal requirements.
A license that has not renewed within the 60-day grace period shall be expired and invalid. A holder of an expired license shall be required to reapply as a new applicant

- Funeral Service Practitioner in charge – (not required for crematoriums)
Establishments must meet all safety and sanitation requirements outlined in the New Mexico Board of Funeral Services rules and statutes.
Funeral Service Intern (FSI) Requirements
Funeral Service Intern – Direct Supervision

- Background check – Release of information form
- Supervising Funeral Service Practitioner
- Funeral Establishment
- Proof of any disqualifying criminal convictions outlined in 64.11.14 NMAC
Funeral Service Intern – General Supervision
- Application
- $200 fee
- Bloodborne pathogens certificates
- Background Check – Release of information form
- Supervising Funeral Service Practitioner
- 50 cases as a funeral service intern under direct supervision
- Funeral Establishment

Funeral Arranging (LFA) Requirements

- 50 arranging cases as a funeral service intern.
- Proof of any disqualifying criminal convictions outlined in 64.11.14 NMAC
- submit satisfactory evidence that the applicant has obtained an associate’s degree in funeral science requiring the completion of at least 60 semester hours from an institution whose funeral program is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education or any other successor institution offering funeral service education recognized by the United States government.
- submit satisfactory evidence that the applicant has passed the arts section of the national board examination.
Funeral Embalming (LFE) Requirements
