ANNOUNCEMENT: Discontinuation of Booth Establishment Licensing

The Regulation and Licensing Department and the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists no longer require a license to rent a booth as of November 15, 2021. Individuals will no longer need to apply for booth establishment licenses and current licensees will not be required to renew any active booth establishment license or process change of location applications.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Practical Exam Testing Resumed – Registration Deadlines and Student Permit Expirations

The Regulation and Licensing Department and the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists has worked with exam provider PCS to resume and accelerate practical exam testing across the New Mexico. Individuals with Student Permits are asked to register for the practical exam in the order listed below and Student Permits are extended until April 30, 2022. Any changes to the testing schedule or extension of permits will be shared here and by email.

  • Individuals currently registered to take a practical exam with PCS (as of Nov. 15) will be offered testing first, with the expectation from PCS that this group will complete testing by January 31, 2022
  • 2020 (and earlier) graduates must register for their exam by December 31, 2021
  • 2021 graduates must register for their exam by March 31, 2022
  • 2022 graduates and timeline will be reviewed in early 2022 to determine if extensions are needed
