Barbers and Cosmetologists

The Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists sets standards for licensure and renewals to ensure licensed professionals and establishments meet the required standards of education, competency and practice so customers receive quality services.

The Board regulates the following license types:

  • Barbers
  • Cosmetologists
  • Esthetician
  • Electrologist
  • Hairdressers
  • Manicurists/Pedicurists
  • Establishments
  • Barbers and Cosmetologists Schools

The Board investigates complaints from customers and inspects establishments to guarantee all sanitation and infection control standards are met. The Board takes appropriate disciplinary action when there are violations of the rules and laws.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Discontinuation of Booth Establishment Licensing

The Regulation and Licensing Department and the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists no longer require a license to rent a booth as of November 15, 2021. Individuals will no longer need to apply for booth establishment licenses and current licensees will not be required to renew any active booth establishment license or process change of location applications.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Practical Exam Testing Resumed – Registration Deadlines and Student Permit Expirations

The Regulation and Licensing Department and the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists has worked with exam provider PCS to resume and accelerate practical exam testing across the New Mexico. Individuals with Student Permits are asked to register for the practical exam in the order listed below and Student Permits are extended until April 30, 2022. Any changes to the testing schedule or extension of permits will be shared here and by email.
